The book tells the story of the people who formed the elite of Ukrainian society from the mid-19th to the early 20th century — those who prepared the ground for the Ukrainian Revolution of 1917–1921.

The biographies of Kyiv’s intellectuals are organized by profession: politicians, historians of Ukraine, legal historians, church historians, literary scholars, priests, and cooperative activists. The book also includes accounts of the educational institutions where the protagonists worked with dedication. The author evaluates the contribution of these scholars to the treasury of national historiography and provides the addresses of their residences in Kyiv throughout their lives.
